The Problem With a Flat Stone Ceiling

Walk into a Norman crypt and you feel it before you can name it: low, thick, close. Early medieval builders in England worked mostly in barrel vaults and groin vaults, both inherited from Roman and Romanesque practice, and both came with a brutal trade-off. A barrel vault — a single continuous half-cylinder of stone — pushes its weight outward along the entire length of the wall beneath it. Keep that wall too thin, or too tall, and it fails. So Romanesque masons kept walls thick, windows small, and interiors dim. It wasn’t a style choice so much as a structural cage.

The groin vault, formed where two barrel vaults cross at right angles, was an improvement. It concentrated the thrust into four points instead of spreading it along a wall, which meant those four points could be reinforced with piers while the wall between them opened up. But groin vaults are unforgiving to build. The curved surfaces where the two barrels meet — the groins themselves — have to be cut and fitted freehand, without any guide, which made them slow, expensive, and prone to sagging out of true.

The fix that changed everything was almost embarrassingly simple: build the ribs first. A stone skeleton of diagonal, transverse, and wall ribs went up first, self-supporting and rigid the moment the mortar cured, and then the mason filled the gaps between with thin panels of stone called webbing. I’ve always thought this is the detail people miss when they call ribbed vaulting “decorative.” It wasn’t primarily about looking impressive, although it does.

It was a construction shortcut. Ribs meant the heavy formwork could be removed early, less timber was needed overall, and weight now travelled down defined lines to specific points on the wall — points that could be buttressed from outside rather than by brute wall thickness. That’s the direct answer to why architects abandoned groin vaults for rib vaults: rib vaults were lighter, faster to build, and let the load be routed exactly where the builder wanted it. The 7 English Gothic Vaulting Types, in the Order They Were Built

I’ve grouped these roughly by when they appeared, because the sequence tells its own story. Each type kept the rib logic of the one before it and then added something — more ribs, more decoration, or in the case of fan vaulting, an entirely new geometry.

1. Quadripartite Rib Vault

This is the starting point of English Gothic proper, and you’ll find it holding up the earliest bays of Canterbury’s choir (rebuilt from 1174 by William of Sens) and much of the Early English work at Salisbury. A quadripartite vault divides each bay into four triangular sections, called severies, using two diagonal ribs that cross at a central boss, plus transverse ribs marking the edge of each bay. It’s plain by later standards.

It’s also the vault that proves the whole concept works — light, buildable in sections, and strong enough to carry taller elevations than anything Romanesque builders had managed. 2. Sexpartite Vault

Add one more transverse rib across the middle of each bay and you get six sections instead of four — a sexpartite vault. It shows up in the earliest phases of Canterbury and in a handful of transitional buildings where masons were still working out how alternating “strong” and “weak” piers should carry the extra rib. English builders largely abandoned the form by the early thirteenth century in favour of straightforward quadripartite bays, which is one reason sexpartite vaulting reads today as a brief, slightly awkward experiment rather than a mature English type. France held onto it far longer, at Laon and Notre-Dame’s nave among others.

3. Tierceron Vault

Here’s where England properly starts to diverge. A tierceron is an extra rib that springs from the same point as the main diagonal ribs but travels up to a point on the ridge rib rather than to the central boss. Add two, four, or six of these per bay and a plain quadripartite vault starts to look like a spreading palm frond — which is exactly the comparison most architectural historians reach for.

Lincoln Cathedral’s choir, rebuilt from 1192 under master mason Geoffrey de Noyers, has an asymmetrical version of this so unusual it’s nicknamed the “crazy vault.” But the type reaches full maturity at Exeter Cathedral, begun in the 1270s, where tierceron ribs run unbroken along the entire nave and choir — reportedly the longest unbroken medieval vault anywhere in the world. Stand at the west end of Exeter and look east; that repeating palm-frond rhythm, bay after bay after bay, is what a tierceron vault looks like at full scale.

4. Lierne Vault

By the early 1300s, English masons wanted more than structural ribs — they wanted pattern. A lierne is any rib, other than the ridge rib, that doesn’t spring from the wall or pier at all; it just connects other ribs to each other, purely to create a design. The name comes from the French lier, to bind. Liernes let masons build star shapes, lozenges, and elaborate webs across the vault surface without adding any real structural work, and they’re the reason a lierne ceiling can look almost too busy to read as architecture at all.

Ely’s octagon and lantern (built 1322–1330 after the old crossing tower collapsed) uses liernes to spectacular effect, and Norwich Cathedral’s nave, reworked in the fifteenth century, layers liernes on top of an older tierceron vault rather than replacing it outright. Wells Cathedral’s chapter house shows the type at its most disciplined — a single central pillar radiating tiercerons and liernes out to the walls like a stone umbrella.

5. Fan Vault

This is the one people travel to see. A fan vault abandons the idea of individual structural ribs converging on a boss and instead carves a whole inverted, concave cone — like an opened fan or a stalactite turned upside down — out of identically curved “ribs” spaced at equal angles. Crucially, in a true fan vault those ribs usually aren’t load-bearing lines at all; they’re carved into solid stone panels for effect, while the conoid shape itself, and often a hidden structural framework above it, does the real work.

The earliest surviving example is generally agreed to be the east cloister walk at Gloucester Cathedral, built between roughly 1351 and 1377 after a fire forced rebuilding of the transepts and choir in the new Perpendicular style. From Gloucester the form spread through a fairly small cluster of West Country and royal projects — Sherborne Abbey, Bath Abbey, the Divinity School at Oxford, and eventually King’s College Chapel in Cambridge (built 1446–1515), which carries the largest fan vault anywhere in the world. 6. Pendant Vault

Take a fan vault and let one of its conoid points drop free of the wall, hanging in mid-air over the nave like an enormous stone lantern, and you have a pendant vault. It looks structurally reckless. It isn’t, quite — the pendant is usually an oversized voussoir carried by a hidden transverse stone arch running above the visible ceiling, so the weight is actually travelling sideways to the walls before it ever reaches the point that looks like it’s floating.

The Henry VII Lady Chapel at Westminster Abbey (1503–1519) is the type’s masterpiece and, in my view, the single most theatrical ceiling in English church architecture — genuinely worth craning your neck for on a cold visit, when the stone above looks less like masonry and more like something suspended by will alone.

7. Net (or Stellar) Vault

Some of the most elaborate late medieval English ceilings resist being called purely tierceron, lierne, or fan, because masons freely combined all three approaches by the fifteenth century. A net vault uses densely packed liernes to create a continuous diamond or lozenge lattice across the whole ceiling surface, ignoring individual bay divisions almost entirely — St Mary Redcliffe in Bristol is a well-documented example of this “stellar” treatment. It’s less a separate structural system than the lierne vault taken to its decorative limit, and it’s the clearest sign of how far the ribbed vault had travelled from its plain quadripartite starting point.

Tierceron vs. Lierne: What’s Actually the Difference?

This is the question I get asked most often, and it’s a fair one, because at a glance both types look like “extra ribs on a plain vault.” The distinction is about where the rib starts, not how it looks.

A useful shortcut: if you can trace a rib back to a springing point on the wall, it’s either a main rib or a tierceron. If it only ever touches other ribs, it’s a lierne. Vaults built after about 1330 usually mix both, which is exactly why they can be hard to read at first glance.

Why Fan Vaults Are Considered Uniquely English

Fan vaulting is the one English Gothic vaulting type that essentially stayed put. French Flamboyant masons and German Sondergotik builders were inventing their own spectacular late-Gothic ceilings during the same decades — net vaults, star vaults, even genuinely unusual “diamond” vaults in Poland and Bohemia — but none of them adopted the true fan, meaning ribs of identical curvature spaced at equal angles around a single vertical axis, forming a real conoid. A handful of continental vaults imitate the look using elaborate liernes without actually cutting the conoid geometry, which architectural historians treat as a related but distinct achievement.

Part of the reason is straightforwardly geographic and economic. The form was born at Gloucester, spread to a tight cluster of West Country abbeys with shared masons and patrons, and then jumped to royal commissions — Oxford, Cambridge, Westminster — through direct patronage rather than wider European trade routes. It also required an oolitic limestone that carves cleanly into large, precise conoid panels, and the Cotswolds happened to sit on exactly that stone.

Continental late Gothic largely used different building materials and different masonic networks, and by the time fan vaulting had matured in England during the fifteenth century, the Reformation was only a few decades from ending large-scale English cathedral building altogether. Acoustic Design in Gothic Cathedrals: Did Vaulting Shape the Sound?

Nobody in the thirteenth century could calculate a reverberation time — that idea wasn’t formalised until Wallace Sabine’s acoustic experiments in the 1890s — but medieval masons clearly learned by ear what worked. A cathedral is, acoustically, a stone box with almost nothing to absorb sound: hard floors, hard walls, a hard vaulted ceiling overhead, which is exactly why reverberation times in large Gothic buildings can run to several seconds, occasionally longer. Not from scratch, and not for the same reasons — but the vocabulary hasn’t disappeared. Bath Abbey’s famous fan-vaulted nave is itself a nineteenth-century addition; the choir has genuine sixteenth-century fan vaulting, but Sir George Gilbert Scott extended the pattern over the nave in the 1860s during a major Gothic Revival restoration, matching the medieval geometry closely enough that most visitors assume the whole ceiling is original. More recently, university chapels, restoration projects, and even a handful of contemporary churches have used cast concrete, GRP (glass-reinforced plastic), or CNC-cut stone panels to reproduce fan-vault geometry at a fraction of the weight and cost of solid stone — visually close to the real thing, structurally almost nothing alike.
