About Dr. Julian Thorne
Dr. Julian Thorne is a leading architectural historian and regular expert contributor to Culture Mosaic. His work explores the intersection of medieval engineering, sacred theology, and structural preservation across Europe’s iconic Gothic landmarks.
His passion for medieval masterworks began with the soaring vaults of Salisbury Cathedral and the historic cloisters of Canterbury. Today, Dr. Thorne specializes in the evolution of High Gothic engineering—specifically how the development of the rib vault and flying buttress allowed 12th and 13th-century master builders to open stone structures to unprecedented light.
Dr. Thorne holds a Ph.D. from the Courtauld Institute of Art and actively collaborates on international heritage conservation initiatives, including advisory research regarding the restoration of Notre Dame de Paris.
